Porter Grubbs

Poppet

An excerpt of the piece, Poppet - work in progress performance at The Bakery // Atlanta, GA | 10/14/18

“Poppet” is a performance installation piece by MediumsATL artists Porter Grubbs and Peter Flamming/Rogue Jury.

The dancer, Porter Grubbs, takes on the role of a poppet - an effigy designed to channel sympathetic magic. Electronic music producer and performance artist Peter Flamming/Rogue Jury uses pre-made compositions in conjunction with live music to shift the energetic state of the poppet. How does rage manifest through sound and through the body? What is the physical state of possessive intentions vs. protective intentions? We use regular and irregular states of rhythm, tone, and timbre to convey these intentions.

The full installation includes warm lights in front of a wall of various reflective materials and a small interactive shrine built and activated by Peter before the beginning of the performance. This places the audience under the effects of scent and ambient sound - very powerful sensations that can often conjure a sense of the otherworldly.

This piece examines the role of social media and curatorial technology in shaping our perspectives and our relationships - to others and to the self.

Filmmaker Leo Hollen, Jr. and choreographer Porter Grubbs collaborated with KitModus dancers to create a dance film which played during portions of the performance. Much of the movement was created using recording and editing tools commonly found on social media platforms - boomerang, rewind, slo-mo, and 15s recording capacity improvisation sessions.

In addition, tech artist Deigratia Daniels installed an Xbox Kinect along with AR software that edited music based on movement that it captured in real time, illustrating our ability to immediately curate our own realities through technology.

E|idol|on

E|idol|on, Performed by students of Troy University Dance BFA.

Premiered at Troy University - Nov. 2010.

Performed at Samford University Theatre / Alabama dance festival New Works Concert - Jan. 2011.

E|idol|on is a dance theatre piece that examines the act of objectification. We began with a single task - turn humans into objects and objects into humans.

What happens to personality and persona when it is assigned a value? How does value affect perception? How does it affect one’s posture?
